Partial Dentures

What are Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a type of removable dental prosthesis that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of three options which are determined by your natural teeth and are either a metal, flexible or plastic framework that holds artificial teeth in place, and are designed to fit snugly around the remaining natural teeth. The framework is usually made of a lightweight metal such as chrome cobalt or titanium, and the artificial teeth are typically made of acrylic. Partial dentures are typically held in place by clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth, although some designs may use precision attachments or other methods to keep them in place. They can be used to replace one or multiple missing teeth, and can help to restore a patient’s ability to speak and chew properly, as well as improving the appearance of their smile.

Who would need Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures are typically used by adults who have lost some, but not all, of their natural teeth. They can be particularly beneficial for older adults, who may have lost teeth due to natural causes such as tooth decay or gum disease. However, partial dentures can also be used by individuals of any age who have lost teeth due to injury or other reasons. The use of partial dentures can help to improve the patient’s ability to eat, speak, and maintain their overall oral health.

Are there alternatives to Partial Dentures

Yes, there are alternatives to partial dentures. Some of the most common alternatives include:

  • Dental Bridges: A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that is anchored to the remaining natural teeth on either side of the gap. The false tooth, or pontic, is suspended in the gap and held in place by the anchoring teeth.

  • Dental Implants: A dental implant is a small titanium post that is inserted into the “maxilla” (upper jaw) or “mandible” (lower jaw) and then capped with a dental crown. Dental implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth and can provide a more permanent solution than dentures.

  • Removable Retainer with attachments : A removable retainer with attachments can be used instead of partial dentures, it can help to hold a dental bridge or partial denture.

During yoru initial consultation we cover the benefits of each of these options.

Do I need “Immediate” Partial Dentures

Immediate partial dentures are dentures that are inserted into the mouth immediately after one or more teeth have been extracted. They are used to fill the gap left by the extracted teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.

There are several situations where immediate partial dentures may be needed:

  1. Extraction of multiple teeth: If multiple teeth need to be extracted, immediate partial dentures can be inserted to fill the gaps left by the extracted teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.

  2. Preparation for a permanent prosthetic: Immediate partial dentures can be used as a temporary solution while the patient is waiting for a permanent dental bridge or implant to be placed.

  3. Improving aesthetics: Immediate partial dentures can be used to improve the patient’s appearance immediately after the extraction of one or more teeth, especially if the extraction is visible when the person smiles.

  4. Facilitating healing: Immediate partial dentures can be used to keep the extraction site covered and protected during the healing process, it can also help to keep the area clean and reduce pain and inflammation.

It’s important to note that Immediate partial dentures are not a long term solution and will need to be replaced with a conventional partial denture or other alternatives once the healing process is finished.
